Myron Ebell and the Start of Darkness
A man who believes that clean and affordable renewables and energy efficiency will cause massive blackouts is deciding the fate of the Environmental Protection Agency. Myron Ebell, career lobbyist, wrote in 2012 that “Cutting American coal power generation will turn on the dark in the United States, increase costs on American energy users, reduce Americans’ standard of living and fail to decrease worldwide carbon-dioxide emissions one iota. It truly will be the start of darkness.”
Myron Ebell, a prominent climate skeptic and one of the architects of the American Petroleum Institute’s plan to convince the public that the science of climate change is uncertain, is leading Trump’s transition team for the EPA. For a detailed history of Ebell’s past exploits I recommend research by DESMOG which includes this quote from 2007 that exemplifies his position, “There has been a little bit of warming … but it’s been very modest and well within the range for natural variability, and whether it’s caused by human beings or not, it’s nothing to worry about.”
During the campaign, Trump stated his intention to dismantle the EPA, “Department of Environmental Protection. We are going to get rid of it in almost every form. We’re going to have little tidbits left but we’re going to take a tremendous amount out.” His has consistently asserted the position that climate change is not caused by human actions and repeatedly referred to the connection between fossil fuels and climate change as a hoax. This gem (forgive the language) is pretty typical: “This very expensive GLOBAL WARMING bullshit has got to stop. Our planet is freezing, record low temps, and our GW scientists are stuck in ice.”
Trump’s promise, made this week, to have an open mind about climate change is meaningless without some action to back it up. The biggest and best gesture that he could make would be to show Ebell the door. It can’t happen soon enough.
