This Is What We're Protecting: "Nondiscrimination laws don’t violate anyone’s religious freedom."
Transgender people have been using the bathrooms that best match their gender identity for decades without causing a safety risk to anyone. Why would it? The idea that the solution to sexual assault is designating people from whom women and children must be kept separate is just the rape culture talking. What will make us all safe from sexual assault is instilling a fundamental value of the absolute requirement of explicit, conscious, sober, mature consent.
Transgender people are our neighbors, our family, our community. A good place to start learning more is the National Center for Transgender Equality website.
